Set against the stunning backdrop of the Northern Oregon Coast, with views of the beach and Tillamook Head, Camp Nidaros combines the warm nostalgia of simpler times with engaging, modern programming rooted in Norwegian culture and community.

  • Bare Norsk! – Learning Language the Camp Nidaros Way

At Camp Nidaros, learning Norwegian isn’t just a class—it’s part of the adventure! Campers are encouraged (and joyfully challenged!) to speak “Bare Norsk”—Norwegian only—especially during mealtimes, where everyday phrases and fun vocabulary come to life around the table.

To keep things exciting, campers earn “kuller” (beads) each time they use their language skills. These treasured tokens can be spent at the ever-popular camp auction, where prizes range from a private troll hunt to throwing a cream pie in the Camp Director’s face—a crowd favorite, of course!

Whether they’re asking for seconds in Norwegian or trading beads with friends, campers leave Nidaros with more than just new words—they gain confidence, cultural pride, and a big smile.Description goes here

  • From Sunrise to Sunset – Active Days, Joyful Hearts

At Camp Nidaros, campers are immersed in fun from morning to night, with a full schedule designed to keep minds engaged and bodies moving. Each day includes real physical activity, whether it’s a spirited game of Kubb, a sandy beach hike, cabin competitions, or classic camp games.

This active rhythm reflects the Norwegian concept of friluftsliv—a love of open-air life and deep connection to the outdoors. Rain or shine, campers embrace nature, build resilience, and discover the joy of movement in one of the most beautiful coastal settings in Oregon.

  • Spin, Sing, and Skål! – Folk Traditions in Motion

One of the most beloved traditions at Camp Nidaros is folk dancing, where campers laugh, stomp, and spin their way through classic Norwegian dances like “Gustav Skål!” and “Tyven Tyven.” Set to lively music and bursting with energy, this activity is as entertaining as it is unforgettable.

Even the shyest campers can’t resist the pull of the dance floor—soon everyone is clapping, turning, and grinning from ear to ear. But the fun doesn’t stop at the dance steps!

Campers also explore Norwegian music culture, both old and new, learning the rhythms and stories behind the songs. Many of our talented staff are musicians themselves, and their guitars help bring these melodies to life as campers sing along and discover the joy of Norwegian music, language, and tradition.

  • Crafting Culture – Norwegian Art with Heart

At Camp Nidaros, arts and crafts are more than just creative fun—they’re a hands-on connection to Norwegian heritage. Campers get the chance to tap into their imagination while exploring traditional and modern Scandinavian crafts.

From rosemaling-inspired painting to woven heart baskets, Viking runes, and handcrafts, each project gives campers a chance to express themselves while learning about the rich artistic traditions of Norway. It's a time to slow down, get messy, and make something meaningful—often to take home as a keepsake from their unforgettable week.

Whether it’s their first time picking up a paintbrush or they’re a seasoned crafter, every camper finds joy in creating something beautiful and uniquely Norwegian.

  • Campfire and Song – Where Magic Meets Tradition

As the sun dips below the horizon on the Oregon coast, Camp Nidaros comes alive at the new Jotunheimen Bonfire Pit—a gathering place as epic as its name. In the evenings, campers cozy up around the fire to share laughter, stories, and songs passed down through generations, all accompanied by guitars and the occasional tall tale.

Favorites like “Å Han Ola,” “Fjellveivisen,” and “Kumbaya” echo into the night, blending rich Norwegian heritage with timeless camp tradition. These evenings are more than just songs—they’re where friendships deepen, stories take root, and memories are made under a canopy of stars.

  • Cabin Life – Cozy Quarters & Camp Spirit

At Camp Nidaros, the rustic charm begins in the cabins—Freya, Idun, Thor, and Odin—each one tucked among the trees and filled with the lively energy of campers making lifelong memories. Equipped with classic wooden bunk beds, these cozy cabins are home base for laughter, late-night whispers, and a little healthy competition.

Throughout the week, a friendly rivalry brews between the boys’ cabins, Odin and Thor, and the girls’ cabins, Idun and Freya. Whether it's a Kubb match, a scavenger hunt, or cabin-cleaning points, each group brings team spirit and pride to every challenge, cheering one another on with enthusiasm and camp cheer.

Guiding them every step of the way are our dedicated camp counselors, many of whom are Camp Nidaros alumni themselves. With years of experience—and often graduates of Senior Camp Trollhaugen near Mt. Rainier in Washington—they bring tradition, leadership, and heart to every bunk, meal, and campfire moment.

  • A Taste of Norway, Made with Care

At Camp Nidaros, mealtime is part of the adventure! Our talented chef and kitchen crew prepare three delicious, nutritious meals a day and snacks, blending classic camp favorites with special opportunities to taste traditional Scandinavian dishes—yes, even pickled herring for the curious and brave! Whether it’s hearty fare after a beach hike or a themed Norwegian dinner, food at camp is both comforting and culturally enriching.

  • Honoring the Heart of Camp – Our Alumni & Families

Camp Nidaros shines each summer thanks to the incredible dedication of our alumni and camp families, who return each June to prepare the grounds and facilities for the next generation of campers. Their love for Camp Nidaros runs deep—rooted in unforgettable experiences that span decades of tradition and connection.

This year, we were honored to have volunteers whose camp memories stretch from 1960 to 2024—a living legacy of joy, community, and cultural pride. We truly couldn’t do it without them, and we are endlessly grateful for their time, energy, and enduring commitment to making each summer the best one yet.
